PRAYERS: And you shall not strip your vineyard bare, neither shall you gather the fallen grapes of your vineyard. You shall eave them for the poor and for the sojourner: I am the Lord your God. Leviticus 19:10 (When I lived in Arizona, after the farmers picked the cabbages, the rest were left in the field for anyone to go pick, and believe me everyone went and picked them. Not so many food stamps and welfare in those days, people had to actually work for their food, if they were able. We only helped the ones who were not able.) I do believe it would be better if that was still the case. It has a lot to do with self respect and didn’t Jesus tell the Apostles, if you want to eat you must work?)
ONE OF THE GREATEST TABOOS: (THEY) SOLD HIM TO THE ISHMAELITES FOR TWENTY PIECES OF SILVER. GENESIS 37:28
Money and power go together. There is also a real relationship between power and a sense of self-worth. Do we ever use money to control people or events? In other words, do we use our money to make things happen the way we want them to happen? Do we ever use money simply to give others the freedom to do what want to do? How do we feel when people ask us for money? If any of these questions makes up uncomfortable, it may be because talking about money is one of the greatest taboos around.
All that I have, generous God, comes from you. Help me share these gifts with others.
Have a blessed Lent.
