MEDITATION OF THE DAY (SAINT JOAN)

SAINT JOAN OF ARC

You felt so afraid,
so all alone
in the dungeon
of disbelief
mistrust,
daggers thrust
into your confidence.
Your cheek
you turned
against the splinters
of the stake
and there it stayed
and burned.

Charred body’s
what was left
to tell the story of your death.
But of your life,
what could we say?

Not a fallen soldier
but a burnt and blackened bride
went to paradise
that day.

(By Rita A. Simmonds, an award-winning poet who lives in Brooklyn with her husband and 2 children)

I THINK THIS IS A BEAUTIFUL POEM OF SAINT JOAN, A HERO IN HER TIME, A HERO STILL TODAY. SHE FOUGHT AND DIED FOR HER FAITH.

I took her name as my Saint’s name when I was Confirmed, in hopes I would have the same courage to defend my faith as she did.
I have a young lady friend who recently did the same thing. I was and am very proud of her for having that kind of courage.

EASTER, 6TH WEEK,THURSDAY, 5/29 (THE ASCENSION)

Meditation of the Day :  In the Scripture readings the whole significance of Christ’s Ascension is summarized for us.  The richness of this mystery is spelled out in two statements:  Jesus gave instructions, and then Jesus took his place….

the words of Jesus became a treasure for the Church to guard and to proclaim, to meditate on and to live.  And at the same time, the HOLY SPIRIT implanted in the Church an apostolic charism, in order to keep this revelation intact. Through his words, Jesus was to live on in his Church:  I AM WITH YOU ALWAYS.  And so the whole ecclesial community became conscious of the need for fidelity to the instructions of Jesus, to the deposit of faith.  This solicitude was to pass from generation to generation–down to our own day…

And the SECOND reflection on the meaning of the Ascension is found in this phrase: JESUS TOOK HIS PLACE. After having undergone the humiliation of his Passion and Death, Jesus took his place at the right hand of God; he took his place with his eternal Father.  But he also entered heaven as our Head…

Because of Christ’s merits, because of his intercession with the Father, we are able to attain justice and holiness of life, in Him.  The Church may indeed experience difficulties, the Gospel may suffer setbacks, but because Jesus is at the right hand of the Father the CHURCH WILL NEVER KNOW DEFEAT, CHRIST’S VICTORY IS OURS.  THE POWER OF THE GLORIFIED CHRIST, THE BELOVED SON OF THE ETERNAL FATHER, IS SUPERABUNDANT, TO SUSTAIN EACH OF US AND ALL OF US IN THE FIDELITY OF OUR DEDICATION TO GOD’S KINGDOM…

The efficacy of Christ’s Ascension touches all of us in the concrete reality of our daily lives.  Because of this mystery it is the vocation of the whole Church to wait in joyful hope for the coming of our Savior, Jesus Christ….

Try to understand and share the joy that Mary experienced in knowing that her Son had taken his place with his Father, whom he loved infinitely. AND RENEW YOUR FAITH TODAY IN THE PROMISE OF OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST, WHO HAS GONE TO PREPARE A PLACE FOR US, SO THAT HE CAN COME BACK AGAIN AND TAKE US TO HIMSELF….Saint John Paul II (Pope from 1978 to 2005)

PRAYER:  Gladden us with holy joys, almighty God, and make us rejoice with devout thanksgiving, for the Ascension of Christ your Son is our exaltation, and where the Head has gone before in glory, the Body is called to follow in hope.  Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen

EASTER, 6TH WED., 5/28 (SING PRAISE TO GOD)

ALL CREATION SINGS PRAISE TO GOD SIMPLY BY BEING FULLY WHAT THE CREATOR INTENDED.  IN THE RISEN CHRIST, THROUGH THE LIFE-BREATH OF THE SPIRIT, ALL CREATION IS BROUGHT TO FULLNESS IN THE GREAT SONG OF PRAISE SUNG BY A WORLD MADE NEW.

Praise the Lord: ye heavens, adore him;

Praise him, angels in the height.

Sun and moon, rejoice before him;

Praise him, all ye stars of light.

Praise the Lord, for he hath spoken;

Worlds his might voice obeyed.

Laws which never shall be broken

For their guidance he hath made.

Worship, honor, glory, blessing,

Lord, we offer unto thee.

Young and old, they praise expressing,

In glad homage bend the knee.

All the saints in heaven adore thee;

We would bow before they throne.

As thine angels serve before thee,

So on earth thy will be done.

(Hymn, no author, no name.)

Let us praise the name of the Lord for he alone is exalted, alleluia!

EASTER, 6TH MONDAY, 5/26 (MAY IS THE MONTH OF THE VIRGIN MARY)

IN MAY, WE IN THE CATHOLIC CHURCH AND MAYBE SOME OTHER CHURCHES CELEBRATE MARY.  WE HONOR HER FOR BEING THE MOTHER OF GOD AND OUR MOTHER IN HEAVEN.  IN A LOT OF CHURCHES THE CHILDREN BRING FLOWERS DOWN THE AND PUT THEM IN FRONT OF MARY.

We teach our children to love Mary because she is Jesus mother and because she is our Mother in Heaven.  Remember, when Jesus was on the cross He said to John:  “Here is your Mother”.  He didn’t mean just John, he meant all of us. If we ask her, she will pray for us to her Son and join her prayers with ours.’  When my children were born, I asked Mary to pray for their safety and health all of their lives, and since they are now adults, have had some pretty close calls, and are still safe and healthy, I believe she has kept her eye on them and prayed for them when needed.  Do I know that for sure, of course not.  But, why not, she is Jesus mother and she was his first disciple along with being one of the first Saints.  Also, why wouldn’t a son who loves his mother as Jesus did, listen to her prayers and grant her wishes.  My sons would do what I asked of them, if they could.

OUR LADY OF FATIMA:  The Blessed Mother appeared for the first time to three Portuguese shepherd children on May 13th in 1917.  Europe was in the grip of the First World War, which would claim an astounding thirty-seven million lives.  Only eight days before the apparition, Pope Benedict XV had begged the Blessed Mother to intercede for the war’s end.  During her appearances, Mary predicted the devastation of World War II and the grave threat posed by Communist Russia.  Her message to the children and the world:  reform your lives and do penance for your sins.  Pray the rosary every day. (From Magnificat)

When Our Lady appeared to the three children of Fatima in 1917, she urged them to “pray,pray, and say the Rosary for the ending of the war.”  The message was for the whole world.

 (The last of the 3 children became a nun and actually died just a few years ago.  The children were questioned extensively and the appearances investigated before the Church believe the children.)  Remember this was during WW ! and she predicted WWII and Communist Russia.)   For more information on OUR LADY OF FATIMA, GO TO http://www.catholic.com.  There was also a Movie about Fatima which may still be available.

I went to Fatima when I was in Portugal many years ago.  the area where she appeared was beautiful and very impressive.

MY FAITH STORY, CHAPTER 2

These events won’t be in order because I will write them as I remember them.

THIS WOULD HAVE BEEN ABOUT 1989 or so.  I was an insurance adjuster for a company in Northern Maine, where there is a lot of wilderness and small towns.  I was assigned to go look at a house that had been repossessed by a bank and the bank wanted to know the extent of the damage and cost to repair the damage done to the house by the previous owners. I picked up the information from an agency in Houlton, they were the only ones who knew where I was going, and I was not reporting back to them.  I was supposed to go back to my office and do the report.  My secretary did not know where I was and would not have missed me until the next morning.

I tell you all this because what happened when I went through the house still scares and amazes me, that I am still alive.  The house was all by itself with no neighbors.  I went thru the house, saw a door that went either to an attic or basement. I expected there to be something to step on when I opened the door.  It was pitch black, and as I stepped into what I expected to be a step, there was nothing.  I started to fall, grabbed a railing and hung on with both hands. If I had been paying more attention to where I was going than to the damage estimate, this might not have happened.

I don’t really know how I managed to pull myself up from nothing to the floor in the room I had left, but I did, and when I reached around for a light switch and turned on the light, there were steep stairs going down to an unfinished basement. With no top step.  I can tell you I said a prayer immediately thanking God for my life.  I realized that if I had fallen, no one would have found me until the next day, and even then unless someone noticed my car parked on the street and footsteps crossing over a snow bank, who knows when I would have been found.

Remember in the 1990s there were no cel phones and no way to communicate except pay phones and office phones. And there was no phone in that house.  I am still amazed that I am alive.  Some would say it was luck, but believe me, there is no way I grabbed that railing and pulled myself back into that room alone.  A miracle?  My Guardian Angel?  The Blessed Virgin praying for me to her Son?  Who knows, but I am still here, thank God, and God alone saved me.

I still get a lump in my stomach when I tell this story.

EASTER, THE 6TH SUNDAY, MAY 25 (GOD BLESS OUR SERVICE MEN/WOMEN)

MEMORIAL DAY CONCERT, WASHINGTON, D.C., SINGING OF THE OUR FATHER.  Thank God that we still have Freedom of Religion still in this Country.  It is evident tonight at the Memorial Day Concert, when they mentioned God any number of times, sang the Our Father, sang Bridge Over Troubled Waters, and of Course, AMERICA THE BEAUTIFUL AND GOD BLESS AMERICA.  We must fight to keep God in this Country and in our public lives.
