A GLASS OF WINE AND HER ROSARY, 100 AT 7-3-2014

TODAY IS JUNE 29, 2014, OUR FAMILY AND A FEW FRIENDS, AROUND 80 PEOPLE OR SO, GATHERED TOGETHER TODAY TO CELEBRATE MY MOTHER’S 100TH BIRTHDAY.  WHEN WE ASK HER HOW SHE LIVED SUCH A LONG LIFE, AND HOW SHE MADE IT TO 100, SHE SAYS SHE HAS 1 GLASS OF WINE A DAY AND SAYS HER ROSARY BEADS EVERYDAY.

Believe it or not, my entire family has been blessed, we have had illnesses but over all, our entire family is quite healthy, happy and they all have or did work hard, and have homes they worked hard for. The young and old have and do travel, done the things they want to do, and we have children, lots of children, and they are happy, healthy and well behaved and respectful. Well, not always well behaved, by you can’t have everything. But they are respectful, and more or less, mind their parents.  We have everything from lawyers, to social workers, to artists, lots of small business owners and lots of just plain hard working people. More hard working people and new business owners every year.   Why and how did this happen?  I believe that my parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles, the older generation, went to church, and not only on Sundays, prayed, said their Rosary, lots and lots of prayers, for all of us, THEY BELIEVED.  AND NOW SOME OF US BELIEVE, SOME OF US PRAY, AND SOME OF OUR YOUNGER GENERATION WORSHIP AND PRAY. I believe that as long as some of our family continues to BELIEVE AND PRAY AND THANK GOD EVERY DAY FOR WHAT HE HAS GIVEN FAMILY, we will continue to be BLESSED.  I hope so, anyway

Do I know this?  Do I know why our family has been so blessed? No, of course not, a lot of families believe and have not been so blessed, but, I know what I believe and I think my mother and family are certainly proof that GOD LOVES HIS PEOPLE IF THEY TRY TO DO WHAT HE WANTS. None of us are perfect, not everyone in our family believes, not everyone prays, but even then, they are good people, they are raising good and respectful children and they are obeying our laws which are based on the Commandments, and they are good citizens.

I PRAY DAILY THAT GOD WILL CONTINUE TO TAKE CARE OF AND BLESS MY MOTHER AND OUR FAMILY.

FORTNIGHT FOR FREEDOM-TO SERVE-NOVENA-DAY 4, 6/28

OPENING PRAYER:  COME, HOLY SPIRIT, FILL THE HEARTS OF YOUR FAITHFUL AND ENKINDLE IN US THE FIRE OF YOUR LOVE.

TODAY’S REFLECTION:  George Washington wrote that “the establishment of civil and religious liberty was the motive that induced me to the field of battle.”  Thomas Jefferson assured the Ursuline Sisters–who had been serving a mostly non-Catholic population by running a hospital, an orphanage, and schools in Louisiana since 1727-that the principles of the Constitution were a “sure guarantee” that their ministry would be free “to govern itself according to its own voluntary rules, without interference from the civil authority.” (From “Our First, Most Cherished Liberty, U.S. conference of Catholic Bishops, 2012)

(Note: interesting to me is the fact that when I went to Catholic Grade School in Maine, it was the Ursuline Sisters from Canada who ran and taught our school and that was in 1945+)

DAILY PRAYER FOR RELIGIOUS LIBERTY:

ALMIGHTY GOD, FATHER OF ALL NATIONS,

FOR FREEDOM YOU have set us free in Christ Jesus.

WE PRAISE AND BLESS YOU for the gift of religious liberty, the foundation of human rights, justice and the common good.

GRANT TO OUR LEADERS the wisdom to protect and promote our liberties.

BY YOUR GRACE may we have the courage to defend them for ourselves and for all those who live in this blessed land.

WE ASK THIS THROUGH the intercession of Mary Immaculate, our patroness,(Mary is the patroness of the United States)

AND IN THE NAME of your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

WITH WHOM YOU LIVE AND reign, one God, for ever and ever. Amen

(GEORGE WASHINGTON went to war to establish civil and religious liberty in this Country, we are at war again, are you willing to fight as he was????????????)

FORTNIGHT FOR FREEDOM OF RELIGION AND SERVICE NOVENA, DAY THREE 7/27

OPENING PRAYER:  COME, HOLY SPIRIT, FILL THE HEARTS OF YOUR FAITHFUL AND ENKINDLE IN US THE FIRE OF YOUR LOVE.

TODAY’S REFLECTION;  Religious liberty is not only about our ability to go to Mass on Sunday or pray the Rosary at home.  It is about whether we can make our contribution to the common good of all Americans.  Can we do the good works our faith calls us to do, without having to compromise that very same faith?…What is at stake is whether America will continue to have a free, creative and robust civil society–or whether the state alone will determine who gets to contribute to the common good, and how they get to do it. (from “Our First Most Cherished Liberty”  US Conference of Catholic Bishops, 2012)

(I would like to add that shortly the US Supreme Court will take up the case of Hobby Lobby and the Obama Care mandate that says that Corporations have to provide insurance for their employees that includes Birth Control and the morning after Abortion pill.  Hobby Lobby and other family, Christian Corporations have filed suit saying that Freedom of Religion gives them the right to refuse to pay for something they don’t agree with, which in this case is Abortion and murder of innocent babies.  Pray the Supreme Court upholds their right of Conscience in the Freedom Of Religion, which is what this Fortnight for Freedom is all about.  Please Pray.

DAILY PRAYER:  ALMIGHT GOD, Father of all nations,

FOR FREEDOM YOU have set us free in Christ Jesus.

GRANT TO OUR LEADERS the wisdom to protect and promote our liberties.

BY YOUR GRACE may we have the courage to defend them for ourselves and for all those who live in this blessed land.

WE ASK THIS through the intercession of Mary Immaculate, our patroness,

AND IN THE NAME OF your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, in the unity of the Holy Spirit.

With whom you live and reign, one God for ever and ever. Amen

FORTNIGHT FOR FREEDOM, DAY TWO, 6/26

OPENING PRAYER:  COME, HOLY SPIRIT, FILL THE HEARTS OF YOUR FAITHFUL AND ENKINDLE IN US THE FIRE OF YOUR LOVE.

TODAY’S REFLECTION:  Of particular concern are certain attempts being made to limit that most cherished of American freedoms, the freedom of religion.  Many of you have pointed out that concerted efforts have been made to deny the right of conscientious objection on the part of Catholic individuals and institutions with regard to cooperation in intrinsically evil practices.  Others have spoken to me of a worrying tendency to reduce religious freedom to mere freedom of worship without guarantees of respect for freedom of conscience. (Pope Benedict XVI in an address to American bishops, Jan 19,2012)

PLEASE PRAY THE DAILY PRAYER FOR RELIGIOUS LIBERTY BELOW:

ALMIGHTY GOD, Father of all nations,

FOR FREEDOM YOU have set us free in Christ Jesus.

WE PRAISE AND BLESS YOU for the gift of religious liberty, the foundation of human rights, justice and the common good.

GRANT TO OUR LEADERS the wisdom to protect and promote our liberties.

BY YOUR GRACE may we have the courage to defend them for ourselves and for all those who live in this blessed land.

WE ASK THIS through the intercession of Mary Immaculate, our patroness,

AND IN THE NAME of your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

WITH WHOM YOU LIVE and reign, one God, for ever and ever. Amen

FORTNIGHT FOR FREEDOM-DAY ONE, 6/25

LAST NIGHT I GAVE YOU THE DAILY PRAYER WHICH WE SAY DAILY DURING THIS NINE DAY NOVENA TO PRAY FOR A RETURN TO RELIGIOUS LIBERTY IN OUR COUNTRY.  TONIGHT I WILL GIVE YOU THE PRAYER FOR DAY 1.

OPENING PRAYER: Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful and enkindle in us the fire of your love.

TODAY’S REFLECTION: From well before Cardinal Gibbons (in the late 1800’s) Catholics in America have been advocates for religious liberty, and the landmark teaching of the Second Vatican Council on religious liberty was influenced by the American experience… We have been staunch defenders of religious liberty in the past.  We have a solemn duty to discharge that duty today.. We address an urgent summons to our fellow Catholics and fellow Americans to be on guard, for religious liberty is under attack both at home and abroad.

————————————————DAILY PRAYER

Please pray the daily prayer I listed yesterday, and will do one more time here:

ALMIGHTY GOD, FATHER OF ALL NATIONS,

FOR FREEDOM YOU have set us free in Christ Jesus.

WE PRAISE AND BLESS you for the gift of religious liberty, the foundation of human rights, justice and the common good.

GRANT TO OUR LEADERS the wisdom to protect and promote our liberties.

BY YOUR GRACE may we have the courage to defend them for ourselves and for all those who live in this blessed land.

WE ASK THIS through the intercession of Mary Immaculate, our patroness,

AND IN THE NAME of you Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

WITH WHOM YOU LIVE and reign, one God, for ever and ever. Amen

(A novena is a traditional form of prayer which takes place over a period of nine days (the number of days which Mary and the Apostles spent in prayer between the Ascension and Pentecost.)  To participate in this novena, spend some time during each of the nine days using the opening prayer, reflections, and the Daily Prayer printed above.

FORTNIGHT FOR FREEDOM-TO SERVE—-JUNE 21 TO JULY 4

This is the 3rd year, I believe that the Catholic Church, Nation Wide, has celebrated the Fortnight for Freedom, this year the theme is “TO SERVE..   There is several reasons for the celebration and prayers, and it started because we realized that in this Country, the great United States of America, we are loosing our greatest and first right given to us in the Bill of Rights.  In fact some believe that we are in the third or fourth step in the five steps to Persecution. I will explain more another night.  You can get more information yourselves by going to http://www.usccb.org or the Maine bishops site  http://www.portlanddiocese.org.

THE FORTNIGHT FOR FREEDOM PRAYER:  It is suggested we all say this every day.

ALMIGHTY GOD, Father of all nations, FOR FREEDOM YOU have set us free in Christ Jesus.

Amen

God Bless you all, Pray for this Country and the Religious Freedom we have a right to enjoy, and don’t be afraid to speak out when necessary.

SAINT JOHN PAUL II ON THE BODY AND BLOOD OF CHRIST, 6/22-SUN.

SAINT JOHN PAUL II REMINDED US THAT IN COMMEMORATING THE SOLEMNITY OF THE MOST HOLY BODY AND BLOOD OF CHRIST, THE CHURCH “DOES NOT ONLY CELEBRATE THE EUCHARIST BUT SOLEMNLY BEARS IT IN PROCESSION, PUBLICLY PROCLAMMING THAT THE SACRIFICE OF CHRIST IS FOR THE SALVATION OF THE WHOLE WORLD.”  We rejoice in this post-Easter expression of our Eucharist affection in order to deepen our attachment to the unique and unending Event that transforms our lives.  As the Sequence for Corpus Christi begs: “Jesu, of your love befriend us, You refresh us, You defend us, Your eternal goodness send us In the land of life to see.” (Magnificat)

PRAYER:  At this sacred banquet, in which Christ is received, may the memory of his Passion be renewed in us, our minds be filled with grace, and the pledge of future glory be given to us. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever, Amen.
