LENT & COMMANDMENT #4-HONOR YOUR FATHER AND YOUR MOTHER

HONOR YOUR FATHER AND YOUR MOTHER

THIS COMMANDMENT PLACES US IN A KIND OF “CHAIN-OF-COMMAND.” UNDER GOD, we have a serious obligation toward those whom God has placed over us in life–parents, teachers, employers, supervisors, and those whom God has called to govern.  We are not to despise or anger them, we are taught, but to respect, obey, love, and serve them–for they represent the authority of God himself in their various spheres of responsibility.  Likewise, we have a serious obligation toward those whom God has placed under us in society–children, students, employees, any whom God has placed in our care–for we bear the Name of the Lord in our dealings with them.  It is tempting to “step out of line” in either direction!

Examine the damning evidence against you today, and place every accusation over Jesus’ head on the Cross.

Gospel Reading: Monday-Fourth Week of Lent  -Jn 4:43-54

“……..Unless you people see signs and wonders, you will not believe.”  (Jn 4:48)

PRAY FOR THE COURAGE TO SURRENDER DOUBT AND PLACE YOUR TRUST IN GOD’S PROVIDENCE IN YOUR LIFE.

LENT, FOURTH SUNDAY OF LENT, AND 3RD COMMANDMENT

REMEMBER THE SABBATH DAY, TO KEEP IT HOLY. (HEBREWS 10:19-25,& COLOSSIANS 3:12-17)

“WE ARE TO FEAR AND LOVE GOD so that we do not neglect his Word and the preaching of it,” we are taught.  Is that always the case with you?  Is it true every time God’s Word is being proclaimed in church?  Is it true also in your own home?

OR DO television programs, sporting events, social obligations, and business concerns speak more loudly in our ears than does the saving Word of God?  Even when we try our best, we fall short.  We are to “REGARD GOD’S WORD as holy and gladly hear and learn it,” we are taught.  Is GLADLY always the word that characterizes our worship?  Is HOLY the attitude we bring into the presence of the Lord?

GOSPEL READING-4TH SUNDAY OF LENT

“And just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the desert, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, so that everyone who believes in him may have eternal life.” (Jn.3:14-21)

PRAY THAT YOUR BELIEF AND FAITH IN JESUS CHRIST, OUR SAVIOR, MAY BE STRENGTHENED.

LENT, THURSDAY OF THE THIRD WEEK

SECOND COMMANDMENT: THE NAME OF THE LORD was given to you in your Baptism.  There God claimed you as his own child, a member of the Royal Family.

With that great honor comes also great responsibility.  Wherever you go and whatever you do, you take the Name of the Lord with you.  Wherever you go and whatever you do, God’s reputation is at stake, for you are God’s representative who bears the Name.

God’s Name is hallowed when we believe his holy Word and live according to it.  God’s Name is dishonored whenever our actions do not correspond with what God has named us to be.

HOW HAVE YOU “TAKEN” THAT NAME?…FAITHFULLY..OR “IN VAIN”?

EXAMINE the damning evidence against you today, and place every accusation over Jesus’ head on the Cross.

Gospel Reading: LK 11:17 – “Every kingdom divided against itself will be laid waste and house will fall against house.”

PRAY FOR UNITY WITHIN THE CHURCH.

LENT, WED. THRID WEEK OF LENT

MEDITATE ON THE COMMANDMENTS AND GIVE A GOOD EXAMPLE BY HOW YOU LIVE

DURING these two weeks you will be asked to think about the Ten Commandments, one each day and in great depth. Think about them personally, as “damning evidence of broken laws and commandments”   You are free in God;s love to take any infraction of God’s holy Law which you discover in your life–and nail it to the Cross of Christ.  He was willing to bear all the guilt and suffer all the punishment.  HE CAN TAKE IT! AND HE WILL.

FIRST COMMANDMENT demands from us a whole love for God,.-“with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your might.” Nothing less than that is acceptable.

How well have you kept it?  Perhaps more honestly, how seriously have you broken it?

Is there anyone or anything that you fear more than God-like your own reputation, what others might think of you if you truly lived according to this commandment?

Is there anyone or anything you love more than God-like money or pleasure or even a soft pillow on a Sunday morning?

Is there anyone or anything you trust more than God-like your own wisdom or will or abilities?

EXAMINE THE DAMNING evidence against you today and place every accusation over Jesus head on the Cross.

SATURDAY, 2ND WEEK OF LENT-THE TEN COMMANDMENTS

IN THOSE DAYS, GOD delivered all these commandments:

“I,THE LORD, AM YOUR GOD, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, that place of slavery.  YOU SHALL NOT HAVE OTHER gods BESIDE ME..

YOU SHALL NOT TAKE THE NAME OF THE LORD, YOUR GOD, IN VAIN. For the Lord will not leave unpunished the one who takes his name in vain.

REMEMBER TO KEEP HOLY THE SABBATH DAY.  Six days you may labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord, your God. No work may be done then either by you, or your son or daughter.

HONOR YOUR FATHER AND YOUR MOTHER, that you may have a long life in the land which the Lord, your God, is giving you.

YOU SHALL NOT KILL.

YOU SHALL NOT COMMIT ADULTERY.

YOU SHALL NOT STEAL

. YOU SHALL NOT BEAR FALSE WITNESS AGAINST YOUR NEIGHBOR.

YOU SHALL NOT COVERT YOUR NEIGHBOR’S HOUSE.

YOU SHALL NOT COVET YOUR NEIGHBOR’S WIFE, NOR ANYTHING ELSE THAT BELONGS TO HIM.”

Exodus 20:1-3, 7-10, 12-17.

THURSDAY OF THE SECOND WEEK OF LENT

“ABRAHAM REPLIED, ‘My child, remember that you received what was good during your lifetime while Lazarus likewise received what was bad; but now he is comforted here, whereas you are tormented.'”(Luke 16:25)

THROUGHOUT THE DAY, OFFER PRAYERS OF PRAISE TO GOD FOR THE BLESSINGS HE HAS BESTOWED UPON YOU.

____________________________________________________________________

THE CROSS OF JESUS CHRIST to which he was nailed for you can also serve this kind of function, to mark the place where your sins were taken away, and to guide the way you live.  One great Christian hymn says it well:

OH, THAT THE LORD WOULD GUIDE MY WAYS TO KEEP HIS STATUTES STILL!

OH, THAT MY GOD WOULD GRANT ME GRACE TO KNOW AN DO HIS WILL!

THE SECOND SUNDAY IN LENT

I know it’s Monday, missed Sunday, but the prayer is excellent and I wanted you all to have it for your own.     THE SECOND SUNDAY IN LENT

MAKE ME SEE your great distress, Anguish, and affliction,

BONDS AND stripes and wretchedness and your crucifixion;

MAKE ME SEE how scourge and rod, spear and nails, did wound you,

HOW YOU DIED FOR THOSE, O GOD, who with thorns had crowned you.

__________________________________HE DIED FOR ME (YOUR NAME) BECAUSE HE LOVES ME.

I AM UNIQUE! NO one can live my life for me.  What does God want me to do with my personal gifts?
