DID YOU KNOW ABOUT THE BATHROOM MANDATE? DO YOU HAVE CHILDREN IN PUBLIC SCHOOLS?
Article by Gene Barrett in AMAC Advantage Magazine, Summer 2016
While America is a place for freedom of speech and equal rights, the proponents of the bathroom mandate have not stopped to consider the impact of the action on 97% of our population. Here are three reasons why the bathroom mandate is a bad idea:
On May 13, 2016, the U.S.Dept. of Justice sent a Dear Colleague Letter on Transgender Students mandate to every school district in the nation requiring schools to allow students to enter and use the restroom, locker room and shower of their choice based on their self-proclaimed gender identity. While the letter was issued to Offer guidance and is supposedly non-binding, failure to comply could result in lawsuits and the loss of federal funds-i.e. no more free lunch for poor children. However, what is most disturbing is that the mandate requires schools to change the sex of your child on official school documents WITHOUT YOUR KNOWLEDGE OR PERMISSION, if your child has an identity crisis. That means your child can see a school counselor to discuss this issue and you will never know.
Despite the fact that many schools across the country have offered unlimited access to safe and sanitary facilities for transgender students, the federal govt. claim that designating a separate restroom for transgender students is a form of segregation based on sex. (This has already happened in Maine, where a school had a special bathroom for a transgender child, the parents sued, and won, and now the child can use the bathroom of his/her choice, I believe, parents in Maine check this out.)
The backlash to the “guidance” letter was swift and came from states, such as North Carolina, who consider the directive nothing more than unwarranted governmental intrusion into state affairs. In its suit against the mandate, North Carolina said, “If there is any discrimination here, it is discrimination on the basis of biological sex, not gender identity.” So far, eleven states have filed suit against the federal government’s misguided interpretation of discrimination laws, and the Obama Administration’s threat of withdrawing educational funds as leverage.
AN INVASION OF PRIVACY
Privacy is the ability of an individual or group to seclude themselves, or information about themselves, and thereby express themselves selectively. Proponents of the “use any bathroom you want” policy argue that opposition to the mandate is reminiscent of the panic and fear of the racial segregation issues of the 1950’s and 60’s. they are quick to cry “discrimination” against those of us who are simply fighting for our daughter’s right-to-privacy, and her right to use a restroom, changing room, or locker room shower, in the safest way possible. Young girls have different personal needs than boys, and they should be allowed the dignity and right to privacy to take care of these most basic of needs without worrying that a man will walk in the door.
A DANGEROUS THREAT TO CHILDREN
If you are not afraid of the bathroom mandate’s power over your children’s personal space, you should be. Sexual abuse happens when a child is alone with a pedophile. This can happen in a car, an empty classroom or hallway, a private office, or even a public restroom. One in four girls and one in six boys are projected to suffer from sexual abuse before their 18th birthday, and this is just too great a risk to ignore. Every parent should know that sexual predators will seek ways and find places to be alone with your child. The bathroom mandate exposes children to greater risk.
To further illustrate the extremes of the mandate, let’s consider how the federal government requires schools to handle athletic and class trips requiring overnight hotel stays. Instead of permitting a transgender student to have his or her own room or requiring that they room with students of their biological sex, a 17 year old boy who” thinks” he is a girl must be allowed to sleep in the same hotel room with the girls.
THESE REASONS ALONE should be enough of a warning that this bill will create safety issues across the nation. A problem like this should be discussed between both sides to come to a fair solution, instead of the government abusing their power by creating a wager that most schools cannot afford to refuse. The LGBT community has a right to fight for their equal rights. but taking away our right to privacy is a measure too extreme to ignore.
HIGHLIGHTS OF THE BATHROOM MANDATE:
Schools may not provide a gender-neutral restroom available for transgender students. Transgender students must be given free access to any room(restroom, locker room, etc.) that corresponds with their perceived sex rather than their true sex.
Transgender students must be allowed to play on the sports team of their perceived gender rather than their true gender.
Children are allowed to change their gender on school paperwork without parental notification or permission.
On sports or class trips, schools are prohibited from providing transgender students with a separate hotel room. Transgender students must be allowed to sleep in rooms with students of their perceived gender.
I believe I read about a case where the child’s parents had actually had the gender of their child changed from a boy to a girl. That presents even another situation. It seems to me once the gender is changed by an operation, that child should be able to go into the facilities of his/her new gender. Just my opinion, it must create a horrible situation for that child. (What parent would even do that to a child just developing their personality)
WHAT CAN YOU DO? First check and see what your school is doing about this bathroom mandate. Check with the Principal, the Superintendent, the school board. Read the whole mandate. Decide for yourselves what you think is right or wrong, good or evil in this situation. Get other parents involved who agree with you. Stand up for your children. Write to your State and Federal Representative and Senator and find out what you can do.
